Phoenix was picked up as a stray by Animal Control. He had serious burns over most of his body, was emaciated and depressed. We can only speculate as to how he was burned (and will not offer our conclusions here). When it was apparent that he would survive, Phoenix came to us. In the photo, Phoenix's burns were nearly healed, he had been eating regularly and his spirits were picking up considerably. One morning a few weeks later, Phoenix was unable to get up. His rear legs seemed to be paralyzed. Fearing spinal injury or disease, we brought him to our vets. Physical exam and x-rays revealed no apparent cause for the condition. Further testing revealed no clues, either. Phoenix had already demonstrated to us that he had a keen desire to live: we decided to give him a chance to recover.

Progress was slow but eventually Phoenix was able to stand on his own. Then he could walk, but dragged his back feet. Now, six months later, he is able to navigate quite well, though maybe not very gracefully. We do not know whether or not there will be more improvement. We prefer to believe that there will be.

phoenix3b.jpg (21438 bytes)Phoenix runs and plays, he loves toys and treats and he is an exceptionally charming boxer. His burn scars are barely noticeable. His gait is awkward but adequate. He holds his own when playing with other dogs. We do not know how this incident will affect Phoenix in the future, if at all. At this time he is happy, healthy and active: a typical boxer in every way, just somewhat limited in coordination.

Phoenix may be available for adoption to a home which can accommodate his special needs: single story with a minimum of stairs and easy access to outdoors are necessary. Prospective adopters must understand and accept his limitations. Most importantly, they must offer Phoenix the opportunity and the means to develop into the exceptional companion we know he can be.

UPDATE - MARCH,2003: Ahh, the power of a handsome face and undeniable charisma! Phoenix has found the perfect home: a terrific, understanding lady who had visited a while ago looking for a companion for her mature boxer saw Phoenix' page and thought perhaps he might be a good match. A meeting in person confirmed it beyond a doubt.
